Actress Melissa George, nominated for the highly prestigious Golden Globe Award, is quickly emerging as the most promising new actors of her generation. At a very young age, George captivated film and television critics in her native country, and is now being discovered by U.S. audiences in the same capacity, if not more. George played the female lead opposite Josh Hartnett and Danny Huston in the Sony Pictures' film “30 Days of Night,” which rose to number 1 two weeks in a row and critically lauded throughout the world, and was directed by David Slade (“Twilight”) and produced by Sam Raimi (“Spiderman”).
George co-starred in the AFI Audience Award-winning “The Music Within,” opposite Ron Livingston and Michael Sheen (“Frost Nixon”) and “WAZ” with Stellan Skarsgaard (“Mamma Mia”) and Golden Globe winning actress Sally Hawkins. Most recently Melissa starred as the lead in Icon's (Mel Gibson's company) 2009 wide release “Triangle.” This film chronicles the journey of “Jesse” through her five personalities and is said to be her finest performance yet. George's latest film, which has just been completed, is her first big comedic role opposite Mandy Moore, Martin Freeman and Jerry Stiller titled “Swinging with the Finkels,” produced by Deepak Nayar (“Buena Vista Social Club” and the successful British comedy “Bend it like Beckham”).
George was seen starring opposite Josh Duhamel (“Transformers”) in Fox's “Turistas,” in which George filmed the title role in Portuguese. George also starred in the MGM number 1 hit remake of “The Amityville Horror” opposite Ryan Reynolds (“The Proposal”), grossing over 100 million worldwide. Additional film credits include; the comedies “Sugar and Spice;” “Down With Love,” opposite Ewan McGregor and Renee Zellweger; “Dark City” opposite Kiefer Sutherland, Jennifer Connelly and William Hurt; “The Limey” opposite Terrence Stamp and directed by Steven Soderbergh (“Oceans 11”), David Lynch's “Mulholland Drive” with Naomi Watts, and “Derailed” opposite Clive Owen and Jennifer Aniston.
George's career turned a corner with the critically acclaimed and highly anticipated HBO original series “In Treatment” with Gabriel Byrne and Diane Weist. The series, executive produced by writer-director Rodrigo Garcia (HBO's “Carnivale” and “Big Love” and films such as “Nine Lives” and “Something You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her”) and Mark Wahlberg, centers on a therapist (Byrne) who is an esteemed psychiatrist to his patient (George) but, while trying to treat her for her addictions to all things including men, he falls in love with her. “In Treatment” won the AFI Top 10 TV Shows of the Year award and George gained a Golden Globe nomination for her fierce portrayal of Laura.
George started performing in her early years, as a champion roller-skater; touring around the world and amassing numerous awards, including national champion of Australia and a second place finish in the Junior Worlds. At the age of 16, George was cast in the popular Australian television series “Home and Away,” alongside Heath Ledger and Guy Pearce. George was recognized for her work with several Logie Awards, the People's Choice Award for Best Actress and a BAFTA nomination for her portrayal of the leading character Angel Brooks.
In 2003, George had one of the more memorable guest appearance roles in the hit NBC show, “Friends” as the “Lesbian Nanny.” George also appeared as the evil character, Lauren Reed on ABC's hit show, “Alias” in 2009, Melissa was asked to join “Grey's Anatomy,” the number one show in the USA. George played the role of Sadie, Meredith Grey's best friend. When George was 16, she started a nightwear company called “An Angel at my Bedside” selling 10's of thousands of nightgowns bearing her name and her character angel from “Home and Away”. This lead to designing clothing for home shopping catalogues throughout the United Kingdom.
Melissa was also the face of world-renowned makeup artist Napoleon Perdis cosmetics in 2008 and the face of Linney's Jewelry three years in a row. George was photographed by the world's leading photographer, Douglas Kirkland (Marilyn Monroe's iconic white bed sheet photos) for the 2009 Linneys campaign. She has been the cover girl for magazines ranging from Vogue in 07 to GQ. Her press in the U.S. has covered magazines from American Vogue as the “One to Watch” for her role on “In Treatment,” to her recent 15 page spread in “American In Style Magazine” modeling the 2009 latest fashion trends.
George currently resides in New York City and Buenos Aires.
